Album Design

About Our Albums

All our albums are come in a flushmount style. A flushmount album is designed to open so that it is completely flat from edge to edge without any bulging or blemishes. This style of album is considered to be the gold standard when it comes to displaying your images within a beautifully bound book. At Lonely Hunter we offer two sizes 10 x 10" and 12 x 12". Both sizes come complete with 25 spreads (50 pages) which can be ordered in either fine art, traditional photographic, matte or satin papers. We like to give our clients as many options as possible when it comes to designing their album so that each album is unique while reflecting the personality and character of each person. To help with this, each album can be designed with a wide selection of cover materials and colours to choose from, custom cover designs and varying page thicknesses. All albums come wrapped in a beautiful swede pouch which is then carefully placed in a bespoke box. All of these features are bundled into one set price for your album. However if you would like to add more spreads, upgrade the presentation box or purchase additional copy/parent albums, this can all be done as well.

Creating Your Album

Images for your album can be personally selected by you through your online gallery. This can either be done before you complete your order below or after. When selecting images, simply select the heart icon on each image that you would included in your album. Please try to keep selections to roughly 4-5 images per spread. This means an album with 25 spreads, would include approx 100-125 images. Once you have made your selections, you can let Lonely Hunter know via email. You don't need to email your selected images to us as we will be able to view these on our back-end.

When it comes to ordering and designing your album, Lonely Hunter has created the step by step guide seen below so as to make the design process as smooth and easy as possible. Below, you will find the complete range of design options that are available to you when designing the album. Please take note of the different options that appeal to you as you make your way down the page. Once you reach the bottom there will be a form where you can enter all the necessary details. Once we have received the completed form on our end, we will be in touch to organise payment. Please Note: All payments will need to be received before the album can be put into production.

Step 1

Select Your Preferred Paper

At Lonely Hunter, printing with inkjet printers onto fine art paper is our favourite and preferred way to show off your images in all their glory. We believe this is the highest achievable standard and sets the benchmark when it comes to quality prints. But this it not about us, it's about you. Which is why at Lonely Hunter I feel it's important to still give you all the options when it comes to selecting the materials for your album. This way you can get exactly what you are after. Below you will find four different papers with three different printing options to choose from:

Fine Art (Fine Art Paper): Images are pigment printed onto fine art papers by using inkjet printing technologies. Fine art albums are considered to be top of the range because of the wider colour gamut that can be achieved. These premium papers are beautiful, but slightly more delicate than albums with traditional photo or offset printed pages. We absolutely love Fine Art Albums but it's also important to acknowledge the design & care info listed below the example images when making your decision.

Traditional Photographic (Lustre): These are printed using light-sensitive paper and silver-based chemistry, the Silver Halide technology that's been constantly refined for more than a hundred years. True photographic prints offer constant colour under different light sources, unmatched longevity and durability. Because images are embedded in the paper they're ideal for products that are subject to handling.

Offset Prints (Matte & Satin): Offset printing can be used on a variety of paper stocks, making it possible to get the "fine art" look of inkjet printing, for example, but with a more durable product.

Fine Art

Fine Art Paper: The professional, conservation-quality fine art paper is naturally white with a lightly textured rich matte finish.

Lustre

Lustre: Premier lustre paper produces accurate skin tones, with a neutral tone scale from highlights to shadows. Lustre offers bold rich blacks, clean whites and an increased colour gamut for stronger, brighter, more vibrant colours.

Matte

Matte: Matte has a deep matte finish with a softly textured, almost smooth surface. Colours are appealingly subdued, with somewhat less contrast than true photographic prints.

Satin

Satin: Satin has a smooth surface with a slight sheen and excellent colour resolution, perfect for photographic imagery.

Fine Art Albums - Design & Care

Inkjet prints can be susceptible to scuffing and also ink transfer, especially in solid black and dark blue areas. This is why, when designing fine art albums we aim to keep the design clean and simple with natural white paper backgrounds and try to minimise the use of images with heavy dark colours. Full bleed layouts (spreads) are also kept to a minimum in order to prevent flaking or scuffing as the album pages are turned. To keep your Fine Art Album looking beautiful for many years to come, it's a good idea to take extra care when handling the album. This can mean clean hands and maybe even the use of cotton gloves for those who are more particular.

Please note: If you want your layouts to feature lots of images bleeding to the page edge, and/or heavy, dark ink coverage, we recommend traditional photographic or offset printing.

Step 2

Album Page Thicknesses

When it comes to selecting your page thickness, our preferred type is the 'medium' option. We believe the slightly thicker pages will give the album a more luxurious look and feel. These measurements are intended as a guide to the relative thicknesses of the various pages and are approximate.

Light - Traditional photographic & Offset papers: 1.1mm. Fine Art paper: 1.35mm

Medium - Traditional photographic & Offset papers: 1.5mm. Fine Art paper: 1.75mm.

Heavy - Traditional Photographic: 2.0mm.

Step 3 (Optional Extra)

Additional Spreads

All albums come complete complete with 25 spreads (50 pages). When considering how many spreads you need, you should allow for roughly 4-5 images per spread (some pages may have less, some pages may have more). If you would like to increase the number of spreads over and above the 25 provided, please use the price chart below as more spreads are an added extra.

10" x 10" (Per Spread)
Traditional Photographic: $23
Offset: $23
Fine Art: $26

12" x 12" (Per Spread)
Traditional Photographic: $24
Offset: $24
Fine Art: $30

Step 4

Translucent Page

Translucent Title Pages can add another dimension of artisanship to your album. These aren't necessarily for everyone but they are included in the album cost so the option is yours to add one if you wish. The semi translucent page will sit on the right hand side of the first spread allowing you to partially see through to the image printed behind. The translucent page can contain your names, the date of your wedding and who the photography was by.

Step 5

Select Your Album Cover Material & Colour

Please note: The swatches below will be labeled as to whether they can be blind embossed or foil embossed. With multiple material/foil combinations, for technical reasons some combinations may not work in practice. I will advise if your selection proves unsuitable.

Step 6

Select Your Cover Design

You can add a personal touch to your albums with front cover embossing. There are five standard embossing options to choose from which are shown below. If you would like to use a completely different font or design, this will need to be supplied when filling out the order form at the bottom of this page. Custom designs which exceed 70x37mm, 100x25mm or 147x15mm will cost extra. Please double-check names and dates are correct, Lonely Hunter cannot be held responsible for errors in the artwork you supply.

The first two standard options (1 & 2) shown below are 'blind' embossings (pressed into the cover without foil). The remaining three (3,4 & 5) offer the choice of blind embossing or foiled.

Position: Embossings are normally placed in the center of the cover, but within limits you can request a different position (bottom right, spine etc). If you'd like a proof of the size and position, just add a special note in the form at the bottom of the page.

Option 1

Futura: A popular style is a single line embossing pressed into the cover without foil. Names can be separated by '+', '&' or 'AND'. Font size: 36pt. The maximum number of characters we can emboss per line is +/-20, depending on the characters used and the album size. Available with blind embossing only.

Option 2

Bank Gothic: This embossing style allows for one or two lines, typically names on Line 1 and a date on Line 2, pressed into the cover without foil. If two names they can be separated by either 'AND' or '&'. The maximum number of characters we can emboss per line is +/-20, depending on the characters used and the album size. Available with blind embossing only.

Line 1 font size: 18pt, 24pt or 36pt (depending on the size of album or book) Line 2 font size: 18pt

Option 3

Rochester Scriptive: Rochester generally features a one line embossing. Names can be separated by an '&' sign. The maximum number of characters we can emboss per line is +/-20, depending on the characters used and the album size. Available with blind or foiled embossing.

Option 4

Affection Scriptive: Affection generally features a one line embossing. The maximum number of characters we can emboss per line is +/-20, depending on the characters used and the album size. Available with blind or foiled embossing.

Option 5

Windsong Scriptive: Windsong generally features a one line embossing. The maximum number of characters we can emboss per line is +/-20, depending on the characters used and the album size. Available with blind or foiled embossing.

Foil embossing

Embossing albums and boxes with coloured foils can be done if requested. Please see a range of coloured foil options below.

Step 7

Album and Book Presentation

All album orders come with the standard packaging show below. If you would like to upgrade the album packaging to a designer album box this can be done as an added extra. For designer album boxes add an additional $120.00 to the final cost.

Standard album presentation

Unless you choose to upgrade, all albums are presented in a standard soft suede bag and grey presentation box. Refined over the years, the silk-screened box combines two graphic elements, a 17th Century Italian calligraphic text, and a series of leaf and heraldic devices.

Designer Album Box

You can upgrade to a Designer Box for an additional $120.00. These can be ordered plain or with embossing (same as on the album cover). Embossing is another added extra and costs an additional $20.00. Designer Album Boxes are available in all Buckrams and Linens. Choose a colour to suit the album, your personality or to align with your wedding colour scheme.

 Step 8 (Optional Extra)

Copy or Parent Albums

What are they: Copy Albums are small-scale replicas of a larger original book or album. They are ordered as optional extras added to the original album order, and cannot be purchased independently.

Sizes: Copy Albums are available in 5-inch, 7-inch and 10-inch sizes. You can order up to five copies in each of these three sizes, but not copy albums that are larger or the same size than the original album!

Cover materials, styles and extras: The cover material of Copy Albums is matched to the larger original, but the covers are plain. On request you can have the title page and cover embossing matched to the original (only available for 10"). An additional charge of $20 will apply.

Packaging: Copy Albums are presented in velvet bags (no box).
